When there’s a need to repair, replace or add to an existing plumbing system, PEX has become a popular option for contractors. PEX tubing easily bends around corners reducing the need for additional connections. It can also be snaked through finished walls without having to cut out and replace drywall. PEX is also significantly cheaper than copper.

Sounds great – but, what’s the catch?

One challenge with PEX is that it wasn’t introduced in the United States until the 1970s. Which means that working on homes or office buildings built prior to that time means you need some method for transitioning from copper pipe to PEX tubing.

How to transition from copper to PEX

1. Once the copper pipe has been cut, use an abrasive cloth to smooth out any burrs or imperfections.
2. Slide either a male adapter into the hub of a fitting or the female adaptor onto the copper tubing and mark the insertion depth to insure a proper connection.
3. Secure the fitting to the copper pipe using a press tool with the proper sized ProPress jaws.
4. Change the jaws on your press tool to a PureFlow jaw and press the other side of the fitting to your PEX tubing.
