Where is Plastic Piping Used?
Plastic piping has various applications, including hot and cold-water plumbing distribution, water service, fire protection, irrigation, geothermal boreholes, water and sewer systems, gas distribution, industrial and mining operations, power and communications, hydronics, stormwater management, and irrigation.
PPI's leadership and members have been instrumental in establishing uniform testing and design criteria for all current plastic piping applications, including the development of rating methodologies and the first code of acceptance for plumbing, industrial, commercial, and gas distribution. Viega is one of the member companies whose contributions have paved the way for these impactful developments.

Jason McKinnon, Viega's Director of Engineering Services, PPI advisory council representative, and chair of the PPI Education Committee, has been a pivotal figure in Viega's relationship with PPI. McKinnon and other team members work with PPI EPSD and PPI's Building & Construction division, which focuses on plastic pipe and tubing systems used within buildings for applications such as plumbing and water service, fire protection, heating and cooling, snow and ice melting, and ground source geothermal piping systems.
McKinnon states, "There are always dozens of projects, task groups, testing, and research and development going on, and we have the opportunity, as a member, to participate. We lend our expertise to different projects and aspects of the organization." Under his leadership, Viega contributes to the Building & Construction education committee by creating invaluable educational content and participating in various research and development initiatives.

McKinnon explains, "We’re bipartisan when it comes to plastic and metals. We want everything to be approved within the codes, and we don’t try to push one over the other. We want everything included because they’re viable products, and we want to make sure that people can pick what makes the most sense for their particular project."
